My research inquiry relates to evidence-based practice (EBP). To begin with, it seeks to use the current best evidence to address the clinical problem of venous thromboembolism in the intensive care unit (ICU). To achieve this, my research uses online medical databases and organizational websites as sources of information. These sources will provide relevant qualitative and quantitative randomized controlled trials to provide evidence for my clinical problem. Also, my research inquiry will be guided by clinical expertise and will respect and acknowledge patient and family values. This is harmonious with the provisions of EBP. My inquiry will fulfil two practice improvement outcomes. Firstly, it will minimize the prevalence and incidence of venous thromboembolisms in the ICU. Secondly, it will optimize venous thromboembolism risk stratification for all patients admitted to the ICU department. As such, the inquiry explores three interventions. Using evidence-based pharmacotherapy, venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis will be accomplished (Chi et al., 2020). Also, ultrasound screening will be used to diagnose and identify patients at risk of VTE. Lastly, risk stratification will identify patients’ likelihood of developing VTE and guide the initiation of individualized thromboprophylaxis (Chi et al., 2020).

I will evaluate my project by comparing patient outcomes during the pre and post-implementation period. Firstly, I will use patients’ medical records to assess their hospitalization progress. These records will reveal the incidences of VTE. Secondly, I will assess patient registries at the ICU department. Patient registries will provide pertinent information about the interventions and prognosis of patients during their hospital stay. Thirdly, I will administer exit questionnaires and surveys to families and patients to determine their experience.
